Snake Bite Season runs from April to October here in South Florida. As snake activity increases during the hotter months, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s (MDFR) Venom Response Unit has seen a noticeable uptick in snake-related calls.
You need to be extra careful in your yards and on walks around bodies of water.
Capt. Rusty Shaw, with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Venom Response Unit says there are several types of snakes that pose a big threat in the Sunshine State, particularly in South Florida: the cotton-mouth or water moccasin, the most common venomous bite here, and the Eastern diamondback rattlesnake, which is the most dangerous here and in the country. Also, watch out for the pygmy and the coral rattlesnakes.
