Miami, FL - Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio has made a formal request to President-elect Donald Trump for a pardon after being sentenced to the longest prison term among all January 6th defendants.
Tarrio, 42, who was convicted of seditious conspiracy related to the January 6 Capitol riot, was sentenced to 22 years in prison, a record punishment for anyone involved in the attack.
Although he was not physically present at the Capitol on the day of the riot, prosecutors argued that Tarrio orchestrated the assault remotely, just outside Washington, D.C.
His leadership role was described as pivotal in efforts to disrupt the certification of President Joe Biden's 2020 election victory.
In a letter sent Monday, Tarrio’s attorney, Nayib Hassan, appealed to Trump to use his presidential authority to grant a pardon.
Hassan characterized Tarrio as "a young man with an aspiring future ahead of him" and emphasized his potential to reintegrate into society and make positive contributions.
The letter also highlighted the impact a pardon would have on Tarrio’s family.
"Granting this pardon would allow Enrique to reintegrate into a family that is extremely supportive and would further demonstrate commitment to lawful, peaceful, and constructive contributions," Hassan wrote.
"It would also enable him to support his family fully and contribute meaningfully to the community."
Attorney General Merrick Garland previously stated that Tarrio played a "central role" in the violent events of January 6, emphasizing his influence in coordinating efforts to storm the Capitol.
Tarrio's conviction has been a significant milestone in the Justice Department's investigation into the attack, signaling accountability for those who led the assault on American democracy.
According to Tarrio's attorney, conversations with individuals associated with Trump's transition team have taken place, sparking hope for a potential pardon.
However, the Trump transition team has not yet responded to the request, leaving Tarrio's legal team and supporters awaiting a decision.
Tarrio’s case has drawn widespread attention due to its implications for accountability in high-profile criminal cases and the broader conversation about justice and forgiveness for those involved in the Capitol riot.
The request for a pardon now places the spotlight on President-elect Trump, who has faced scrutiny over his own role in the events of January 6.
As the nation watches, the decision could set a precedent for how future administrations approach similar cases of sedition and political unrest.
