Miami-Dade County is cracking down on payroll miscalculations by launching a payroll audit initiative.

The audit comes two years after the discovery of over and under payments involving the Clerk of Court, County Commissioners and employees.

Miami Dade County Commissioner Roberto Gonzalez, who is also an employment attorney, says some months there are hundreds of thousands of dollars in overpayments.

Gonzalez says, "That's a big human error." Adding, "Even if it's unintentional, how are you dishing out hundreds of thousands of dollars in overpayments with the attitude 'It's not my money?' That's unacceptable."

He adds, despite an expensive new payroll system, it appears the miscalculations are the result of human error because some accounting tasks are still being done by hand.

In one case, an employee was overpaid 50 bucks a check for years was just received a bill from the county for $50,000, due immediately.

Commissioner Gonzalez says payroll is not rocket science and the audit will begin immediately.
